Wild Girl: Hunting the Unicorn
Helaine’s story is based on the famous tapestries hanging in the Cloisters Museum in New York, woven
together with legends of Wild Men guarding herds of unicorns in the forests of medieval Europe. It is set
in Berzé le chalet, a real castle, in a time of political chaos five hundred years ago.
Each tapestry is painted in words and comes to life down to the finest detail.
Trapped by privilege and bound by contract to marry a stranger, Helaine de Berzé feels like a caged bird
in her own home. Haunted by secrets and surrounded by enemies in the guise of friendship, Helaine’s
carefully controlled life shatters when betrayal strikes from within. Fleeing into the forbidden forest, she
encounters the Wild Boy and the mythical unicorn he protects—beings of untamed magic who awaken
her yearning for freedom and purpose.
This is just one strand of a multi-layered story: Helaine’s rivalry with her friend Marie; the subtle code of
her love for her father and her obligation to him; the explosion of her love for the Wild Boy; her
compassion for Lady Agnes, whom her father once loved passionately; and her difficult entanglement
with a devious priest. Add the surrounding menace of Ivo the Wolf and his mercenary band…
The luminous presence of the unicorn and the many layers of symbolism around him hold the strands
together.
This first part of the trilogy is a tragedy, because the unicorn must die.
The next installment is already taking shape, based on the tapestries The Lady and the Unicorn in Paris.
The conclusion is based on the Apocalypse tapestries at Angers.
