“Trapped by privilege and haunted by secrets, Helaine is a caged bird in her own home, bound by contract to marry a stranger and surrounded by enemies wearing friendly faces. When betrayal strikes from within, she takes a daring leap into the forbidden forest—where she encounters the Wild Boy and the Unicorn, beings of myth and untamed magic.
Helaine’s journey takes a dark twist when Robert the Priest demands she call the unicorn to its death to save her ailing father. Torn between loyalty and her growing sense of purpose, Helaine faces impossible choices that could shake the realms of faith and power alike. With danger closing in from all sides, she must decide who to trust, how far she’ll go to protect those she loves, and if she can ever return to the life she left behind.”
When I left England for America, I found myself in a strange land, in the rigors of culture shock, and far away from home. I also discovered a culture of creativity I had not expected; I was free now to explore my deepest ambition, to be a writer. I knew nothing of life in the US, so I wrote what I knew.
This story sprang to life when I first saw the tapestries The Hunt of the Unicorn in the Cloisters Museum in New York. The familiar images and history of Europe made a time jump into my new reality, and this story is how I melded them together, made sense of profound change and came home again.
I am a retired psychotherapist once dedicated to working with deep trauma and dissociative disorders. I made myself a new home just outside Washington DC, the nation’s hub of political power, in a tall winged house in a deeply wooded area–open to the liminal and unseen.

Through the doorways of the past into the landscapes of today
When you step through one of these doorways into a different world, a different time, what will you find on the other side?
I often buy real copies of the books I love. You’re welcome to print off these painted doorways to make bookmarks that sync with Helaine’s story…
